KYNEX testing protocol

Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1

Use the same measured course, IR1 audio, recovery zone, and scoring convention each time so one result can be compared responsibly with the next.

Equipment

  • A measured 20 m shuttle lane with clear turn lines.
  • A 5 m active-recovery zone behind the start line.
  • The correct Yo-Yo IR1 audio played through an audible speaker.
  • Cones and a score sheet or observer record.

Set up

  • Confirm the audio is the IR1 protocol before beginning.
  • Measure the 20 m lane and 5 m recovery zone rather than estimating them.
  • Use a flat, non-slip surface and keep the lane clear.
  • Complete an appropriate warm-up before the first shuttle.

Run the test

  • Run 20 m out and 20 m back in time with the audio signals.
  • Use the recovery period and recovery zone exactly as directed by the audio.
  • Continue through increasing speeds until the protocol termination rule is reached.
  • Use an observer when possible to track warnings and the final completed shuttle.

Record the result

  • Record the last fully completed level and shuttle.
  • Keep the audio version, surface, footwear, and test date with the result.
  • Mark athlete-entered results provisional unless the test was supervised under an approved protocol.
  • Do not compare scores collected with different Yo-Yo protocol variants as if they were equivalent.

Testing and safety note

This page standardizes recording; it does not replace the official IR1 audio instructions or qualified supervision. Stop if the athlete feels unwell. A Yo-Yo result is not medical clearance, injury prediction, or a selection guarantee.
